The Rice Lake Warriors opened the first game of Soccer/Football Doubleheader against the Superior Spartans Friday night with a dominating performance as they came away with a 7-0 victory at the NBC Spartans Sports Complex.

The Spartans did not have an answer for the Warrior attack as Rice Lake scored early and often.  Opening the scoring for the Warriors was Cole Clark, who got a feed from Ben Kemp to make it 1-0 in the eighth minute. Rice Lake had two more scores in the first 14 minutes on goals scored by Kaden Aaby and Kemp in the 11th and 13th minutes respectively, both goals were assisted by Zach Buchli. Hunter Holmes put in the fourth goal on a penalty shot and Buchli scored with less than two minutes left in the first half to make the score at half 5-0.

Kemp opened the second half for the Warriors much like the first with a quick goal, and Buchli finished the scoring with his second goal and fourth point of the match in the 71st minute.

The Spartans look to rebound as they travel to Hayward on Monday, October 10th.  They will be back in Superior to host Washburn on Thursday, October 13th.

Hunters Down Spartans

The Duluth Denfeld Hunters crossed the bridge in a Lake Superior Conference Border Battle to take on the Spartans of Superior, Tuesday night at the NBC Spartans Sports Complex. In a game that was back and forth the Hunters came away with the 2-1 victory. Denfeld got on the board early as Caden Rathke scored in the fourth minute giving the Hunters a 1-0 lead. The Spartans came right back, and in the 12th minute Eddy O'Brien put Superior on the board, scoring off of a low cross inside the box from Maverick Petersen making the score 1-1. Both teams kept getting good chances just to be snuffed out by the defenses and the goalkeepers. In the 64th minute the Hunters were able to take a 2-1 lead on what proved to be the game winner on a goal by Rathke. A shot that seemed like a high cross from the outside that just went over the outstretched arm of Spartan keeper Cal Berti. The Spartans kept trying to push forward in the late minutes just to have the Hunters clear the ball time and again.
The Spartans next contest will be Thursday, October 6th, in Ashland. They will return home on Friday, October 7th, to host Rice Lake at 4PM. Denfeld's next contest will also be on Thursday, October 6th, as the travel to Grand Rapids.
