Superior Boys Soccer opened their 2023 season against Rice Lake at NBC Spartan Sports Complex. Superior opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Spencer Kidd found an opening to senior, Ben Staupe on a right legged score. That was how the 1st half would end with Superior leading 1-0. A physical contest on both sides drew a couple yellow cards and one red card during the contest. The 50th minute had Superior scoring their second goal coming from the connection of Ben Staupe to the freshman Spencer Kidd. This would be Spencer Kidd's first high school goal. The Spartans would carry the 2-0 lead to the 67th minute when Rice Lake Junior Midfielder took a free kick from the 40 yard line and buried it right under the cross bar just over the outstretched hand of Senior goaltender Caden Holden. Score carried 2-1 until the final score from Superior's co-captain, Eli Benson, who found the loose ball just inside the 18 yard box and put in with the left foot to seal the victory. The "Gem" of the game honor went to Senior Co-Captain Ben Staupe. Not only his 1 Goal and 1 Assist, but his speed on the field was a real difference. Spartans will travel to Hibbing on Thursday for a 5PM game.
