The Superior Curling Club hosted their 83rd Annual “Great Northwest Bonspiel” this past weekend. The Open Bonspiel attracted 30 teams from around the region and across the border. Many of the teams are veteran teams to this Bonspiel. One of those curlers is J.Jackson, St. Francis, ONT, who has been coming to Superior for the past 30 some years. Jackson states that there are “many reason for coming back year after year but probably the biggest reason is the people”.

This year’s field of teams ranged from members of National Team Champions to novice curlers. One curler said “how cool is it that you can compete against such a wide variety of teams and the experience of some of these people is just awesome!” The Bonspiel started with draws on Friday which ran through the weekend with the Championships draws on Sunday afternoon.

The Main event included two undefeated teams from Kolb; Curl Mesabi and Johansen; Two Harbors. This was an exciting match which left two open ends (2, 5) and Kolb with a 1 point edge through most of the match. Johansen; Two Harbors came back in the 8th end with two really well placed shots and after measurements pushed to an extra end. Johansen closed out the final end to get the victory. Kolb; Curl Mesabi despite the loss, had a very nice Bonspiel which included a big win over Mossberger; Superior, Wisconsin State Champions, to advance to the championship. Johansen team each received a hand carved wood curling rock with engraved setting for the trophy.

The B Event Southern Rocks; St. Paul defeated Setterholm; St. Paul for the victory. In the C Event Brozic; Duluth closed out Pannkuk; Duluth for the C Event Championship. The D Event featured Scheirbeck; Duluth who came back to get the victory over Jackson; Thunder bay.
