The Superior Spartan Boys Soccer Team came into tonight's WIAA Playoff game on a 4 game win streak. The #5 seeded Spartans traveled to #4 seeded Wisconsin Rapids. The matchup of these two came to similar schedules, records and seniors. The Spartans have relied on the Seniors #1 Paulo Pagnucci (GK), #5 Alton Morrissey (LB) and #22 Aaron Moen (CB) in the back row which have only given up 21 goals (1.17 GPG) on the season. The Spartan offense has been led by Sophomore forward #4 Spencer Kidd with 25 goals to lead Division 1 in scoring. This should be a good game.
The first half of the game both teams took some good opportunities on offense but resulting in shots off frame. The first half ended with the score 0-0 and only 1 save recorded in the half to #1 Paulo Pagnucci. The second half the Spartans were a little on their heals but were able to clear some deep runs from Wisconsin Rapids. The Spartans ended up being called for a hand ball in the box during a scurry of players fighting for the loose ball. The PK was awarded and senior #9 Jordan Szelagowski scored the kick in the 46th minute of play. Physical play continued throughout the match with Superior being issued 4 yellow cards to Wisconsin Rapids 1. The tension raised throughout the rest of the game with Superior getting a couple shots off but the final score being 1-0 as the PK goal will stand as the game winner. A hard fought game from both sides on a beautiful night. The season comes to an end for Superior and the Seniors (#1 Paulo Pagnucci, #5 Alton Morrissey, #9 Landon Holsclaw, #14 Fjeordi Johnson, #15 Kieran Hutchins, #18 Presley Bonneville, #22 Aaron Moen, #26 Dancha Stauber, Henry Anderson, Derek MacDonald) with a 10-5-4 record.
