The Superior Spartan Boys’ Basketball team clinched the WIAA Division 1 Regional title this past Saturday night with a victory over Neenah Rockets 62-55 in overtime. The game was an entertaining game of back and forth. Neenah’s Josh Mericel drained a three as time expired to take the 23-21 lead into halftime. The second half was to be much of the same between these two teams. Superior outscored Neenah 31-29 in second half. The two point difference coming from double bonus free throws from Senior, Brandon Meyer. In overtime a couple untimely turnovers for Neenah allowed Superior to extend the lead and not look back closing out the overtime stanza on a 10-3 run. After the Regional trophy presentation the student section stormed the court to celebrate with the players. Head coach, Jake Smith, took a seat on the sidelines to catch his breath and take it all in. As a matchup for a #4 and #5 seeds, it was well matched, well played and an exciting game to watch.

The #4 seeded Superior Spartans (21-3) will travel to Wausau West to face off against #1 seeded (24-0) Stevens Point. Stevens Point comes off a 105-57 win over Chippewa Falls. Stevens Point has averaged just over 83 ppg while shooting 54% from the field. That is combination of tough defense and offensive firepower has landed them a #12 ranking in the USA Today High School Sports Poll. You couldd say that this is the David and Goliath scenario, with Superior having nothing to prove but embrace the challenge. Thursday’s matchup is schedule for a 7PM tip off at Wausau West High School in Wausau, WI. iFan Sports Network will be there covering the game for all those that are unable to attend.
