Colder by the Lake Champion determined

This past weekend,  SAHA Ice Arena and Wessman Ice Arena hosted the “Colder by the Lake” Junior Gold B Hockey Tournament. This tournament brought teams in from Rosemount, Blaine, Thunder Bay, Grand Rapids, Elk River, Duluth, Farmington, Stillwater, Lakeville and Superior. Competing throughout the weekend hometown Superior and Thunder Bay advanced to the Championship game.

                Superior was able to start the scoring in the second period as #17 Kevin Harris was able to beat goal tender Cameron Taylor. Thunder Bay capitalized on the power play at the 7:50 mark of 2nd period to bring score to 1-1. Breaking the tie later in the 2nd period, Superior’s Aaron Johnson  scored to take the lead into the intermission. The third period, Superior’s Trenton Siegel  scored at 14:51 to make the score 3-1.  Thunder Bay was able to battle back when Chase Rinne scored to bring Thunder Bay within 1 goal at 3-2.  Superior’s Goal tender continued to stay hot as Thunder Bay added the extra skater trying to even the score.  That was when #17 Kevin Harris scored empty netted unassisted goal to seal the victory and the Championship for Superior.

                The game was wilding entertaining to watch with good play from both teams.  Winning goaltender for Superior was #33 Nick Garden. #9 Zachary Nelson-Banks had two assists, #12 Matthew Strum and #13 Aaron Johnson added assists for Superior. For Thunder Bay, #12 Bradley VanderZwagg and #11 Cody Kolic each had assists while Cameron Taylor took the loss in goal. To round out the tourney, Rosemount took home the 3rd place trophy.
